Virtual Dating = Green Dating

My friend and I were recently chatting about online dating and how people seem to dread their first dates because most first dates tend to be disappointing and emotionally draining. Abruptly, she stopped in mid-sentence, paused and said: “I wonder how all these bad first dates impact the environment?”

Hmmm. That’s a great question! Unsuccessful social interactions leave a big footprint not only on our emotions, but also on our environment.

For example, scientists have started to quantify the cost of divorce on the environment. According to some calculations, the impact on the environment just in terms of extra energy and water exceeds $10 Billion a year.

When it comes to dating, just think of all the environmentally-damaging chemicals we use to make ourselves look pretty and smell yummy … all for that first date that’s likely to result in another wasted evening. Let’s also consider gas for that thirsty SUV to get us to the date and back in style. And what about …

When it comes to protecting the environment, every bit counts (btw, it was nice to see so many people across the world turn off their lights this weekend to mark Earth Hour!). If you think about it, Virtual Dating, or should I say, Green Dating is an environmentally friendly approach to dating. I wonder how big of an impact it would have on the environment if singles got to know each other a little bit virtually before rushing off to meet in person.

(Maybe we should change the tag line for OmniDate to “Virtual dating. Be part of the solution.” What do you think?)
